Israel pounds Gaza during truce hours

Israel has violated a three-hour truce declared to allow the passage of humanitarian aid, and has resumed attacks on the Gaza Strip.

Israeli troops violated the truce on Friday and continued their attacks on the costal sliver.

The cities of Jabaliya and Beit Lahiya in the north and the Zeitun neighborhood of Gaza City came under Israeli tank fire, witnesses said on Friday.

In Jabaliya, a gas station caught fire after a tank shell hit a lumber yard next door, sending thick columns of black smoke into the sky.

On Wednesday, an Israeli army spokesman said that the military would suspend bombings over Gaza between 1100 GMT and 1400 GMT to let Palestinians to stock up on humanitarian food aid.

On Thursday, Israel violated the truce by opening fire on two UN-flagged vehicles and an ambulance.

A commander of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine was reportedly killed in Friday's attack.

Earlier in the day Israeli F-16s flew low over the costal sliver, while helicopters opened fire on Gazans.

The latest development came as Israel snubbed a UN Security Council resolution which called for an immediate end to the ongoing onslaught in the Gaza Strip.

Israeli Foreign Minster Tzipi Livni and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert downplayed the resolution in separate statements saying that Tel Aviv would only act at its own decision.
